Check company websites for address information, a mover’s registration number, and insurance. Call listed numbers to see how the phone is answered. Look for identifying company information on trucks. Insist on an onsite estimate. Don’t accept quotes over the phone. Check references whenever possible.

Keep a detailed list of your belongings, including the number the boxes they are packed in. Movers are generally not liable for loss or damage during a move.

Check your mover’s licensing, confirm their insurance, and obtain a written contracts. Read your contract carefully, paying attention to terms and conditions, liability limits, and other disclaimers. Ensure dates for pick-up and delivery are clearly listed and that you understand how the pricing is calculated. Never pay cash or make a large deposit before your move. Research insurance coverage and consider purchasing a policy.

It never hurts to ask questions when you don’t understand. Find another mover if your moving company cannot or will not answer your questions.
