Description
Neighborhoods Served: Locust Point, Locust Point Industrial Area, Riverside
Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle (FSK) sits just steps from Under Armour and the shops and development around Silo Point. Yet, its sprawling, green campus, private parking, and extensive sports fields give the school an almost suburban appearance. With brand new STEM lab classrooms, FSK is noted for its extensive use of technology. (Every child, at every grade level, has access to a computer.) FSK also offers a strong, diverse arts program and a variety of sports and extracurricular activities. School progress can be seen in continually rising standardized test scores, which surpass the city average. FSK benefits from strong community partnerships and parent engagement, making it a school families are proud to walk to.

What I love most about my child's school
Students are learning, thriving and happy at Francis Scott Key - including my own. As a parent, I want my children to learn and excel, but to enjoy the process too is ever so important to me. Personally, I am less concerned with test scores, as it is a single data point - what I am observing, and researchers (feel free to ask me more about this) are also finding at FSK, are children are learning and HAPPY! Francis Scott Key has undergone an amazing transformation in the past few years, in its leadership, facilities and its overall culture of FSK pride! Teachers and staff are committed to the school's excellence, and there is a very supportive and rapidly growing set of parents and community members advocating and propelling the school forward. The enthusiasm is contagious. We recently held a joint fun-raiser with the Locust Point Community Association called Patsa Palooza, which was a wonderful success, both in bringing families in the community together and raising funds for the school. Our ongoing partnerships with Under Armour, the Goldseker Foundation and a host of others is invaluable to the school. As a city parent, there are a few things that stand out to me about FSK. We are very fortunate to have an excellent public school in an urban neighborhood, with the land and space of a sprawling suburban school location with lots of green space, and Under Armour's Banner Field in our back yard. Class sizes tend to be smaller than other local schools. We have an every growing number of enrichment activities, both in and after school, lead by our Community / After School Programs Coordinator. We have an amazing Lego and Robotics Lab that support STEM education in all grades. My daughter takes Suzuki Violin lessons on site (a huge help as a working parent) and enjoys the after-school art enrichment program (in addition to an ART SPAR). There is National Academic League, Debate teams, yoga, lacrosse, Lego Robotics teams and so many more options! I love the fact that there is an adaptive and ever growing number of options for our students.
To another parent considering this school
Please come visit us! There's nothing like seeing a school first hand to see if it's a good fit for your family. Please talk with us! We can get all of your questions answered! We have several open houses through out the year, so check with us on that schedule, or we can schedule a one -on-one tour to meet your schedule. We also annually host a prospective parent night at Silo Point, to allow parents to have a brief presentation by school leadership, but also to get a chance to mingle more casually with current parents and teachers. South Baltimore is very lucky to have several excellent public school options. Personally, I love FSK (maybe this didn't come across in my prior comments ;-) ), and we would love to have you in the FSK family!
