November 4, 2016 - Neighborhood Tour
On the final Friday of every month, Live Baltimore heads out of the office and into one of Baltimore’s 277 neighborhoods. Each month, we love what we find! October was no different.
Greektown! This lively, friendly, and authentic Baltimore neighborhood was the site of our October neighborhood tour. A bustling business district, charming homes, and friendly residents welcomed us as we took in life in this popular southeast alcove near Highlandtown, Brewers Hill, and Bayview.
Our Friday afternoon outing began in the tastiest way possible: a trip to the iconic Ikaros restaurant! We enjoyed grape leaves, crab balls, and calamari while learning the ins and outs of this historic neighborhood. Ikaros is one of dozens of authentic restaurants and businesses lining Eastern Avenue—a popular destination for hungry shoppers and families in the area.
After our meal, neighborhood activist Jason Filippou led us on a walking tour, showing us why his family has lived in Greektown for generations. Greektown offers all the elements that make Baltimore neighborhoods great; a thriving business district, strong churches, a great school in John Ruhrah Elementary/Middle School, safety, and a wide variety of living options.
We explored lovely streets lined with rowhomes of all sizes, covered with festive fall décor, and encountered residents happy to stop and chat about their neighborhood. They shared history of the community and invited us back to one of their many events like April’s Greek Independence Day Parade or June’s Greek Festival.
Greektown boasts a diverse mix of working class and young professional residents and is home to the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and the Southeastern Police District. The friendly faces, fantastic food, and Greek heritage made for a wonderful Final Friday in a neighborhood worth loving. After experiencing Greektown for ourselves, we understand the pride!
