What I love most about my child's school
When we moved into the neighborhood, Govans Elementary was a failing school. It didn't matter to us, since we didn't think we'd live in Baltimore long, and we didn't think we'd have kids. Many years later, I stressed about getting through lotteries at every charter school in the City, just so we wouldn't have to send our child to Govans. But, two years at a charter school were torture. The school was poorly run and the staff threatened our 6-year old. Heels dragging, we toured Govans. Govans is wonderful. Every single person at the schools seems to love their jobs. Our child, who HATED school, is ready to walk to school ten minutes before the doors open. He comes home reciting stories he read and already looking forward to tomorrow. He loves his teachers. He went from six suspensions for bad behavior in K-1st to "outstanding" behavior everyday, because the teachers KNOW he can do it. They sneak education in everywhere. Additionally, parents are welcome. Families are celebrated. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the school we tried desperately to avoid.
To another parent considering this school
I was nervous about joining a Title 1 school. I thought of the old movies with bars on the windows and wardens pacing the halls. The income diversity at the school is tremendous. Tour the school.
