5 Things Pigtown Residents Love About Their Neighborhood

In our most recent neighborhood tour, the Live Baltimore team visited the Pigtown/Washington Village neighborhood in Central Southwest Baltimore City. Hosted by Live Baltimore real estate partner Rukiyat Mann, and joined by members of Pigtown Main Street, Citizens of Pigtown, and our own board members, we saw a variety of amenities, homes, and locally loved businesses. Keep reading to learn why Pigtown residents love their neighborhood.

1. A True Small-Town Feel

Pigtown neighbors make it a point to get to know each other. For many residents, that sense of connection is what sets the neighborhood apart. It’s a place where newcomers quickly become regulars, and regulars become friends.

2. Walkability & Convenience

The Pigtown neighborhood’s location allows it to be convenient to most things, while still feeling like its own world. Residents love being able to walk to coffee shops, local businesses, and even the Inner Harbor. Commuters appreciate quick access to major highways, easy connections to other parts of the city, and Washington, DC. Not to mention, Pigtown neighbors are walking distance away from both Oriole Park at Camden Yards and Ravens Stadium.

“It’s close to a lot, like my job. It’s close to the highway for my husband [who commutes]. It’s safe. It’s quiet. It’s close to amenities like ballparks and Pigtown Main Street, so you can walk to pick up last-minute things if you’re hosting. Or walk to get coffee. It’s just very convenient.”

-Bill Joyner; Board Member, Live Baltimore

3. Creative & Collaborative Local Businesses

The Washington Boulevard commercial corridor, the “main street” of Pigtown, is home to a variety of restaurants, breweries, small businesses, artists, makers, and more. In addition, these businesses have the support of Pigtown Main Street, a nonprofit whose mission is to enhance the commercial corridor by improving the aesthetics, promoting branded events, connecting community institutions, and protecting the Pigtown identity. Thanks to these efforts, Pigtown residents enjoy the conveniences of new and longstanding businesses like The Stoop Coffee Shop & Cafe, Swill Apothecafe by Blacksmiths, Mystique Barrel Brewing and Lager House, Wico Street Beer Co., Pickett Brewing Company, Tony’s Grill, and many more.

4. Passionate Community Engagement

With an active community association like Citizens of Pigtown, neighbors in Pigtown always have an opportunity to make their mark on their community. From monthly community meetings to beautification days and safety walks, there are countless ways residents like to get involved.

“I feel like we have a good sense of “city life,” but we have a nice little community. That was really important to me. So, The Citizens of Pigtown, us working to create events and connect the neighbors, that’s one of the main things that keeps me around.”

-Demetria Boyd; Board Member, Citizens of Pigtown

5. Neighborhood Events & Traditions

The annual Pigtown Festival, hosted by Pigtown Main Street, is a neighborhood favorite, complete with pig races, live entertainment, local vendors, and more. From family-friendly game day gatherings to holiday bar crawls and creative workshops, there’s always something happening. Pigtown Main Street has plans to expand with smaller, year-round events to keep that energy going.

“We have our Pigtown Festival every year. It’s always the last Saturday of September. This year will be our 24th year. We have pig races, a kid zone (which is the largest kid zone of any festival in Baltimore), tons of local vendors, food, and entertainment, and ‘The Pigtown Lounge’ featuring a live DJ.”

-Carrie Baniszewski; Executive Director, Pigtown Main Street
