About Hampstead Hill Academy

Hampstead Hill Academy is a neighborhood public charter school, part of the Baltimore Curriculum Project (BCP) family of schools. Its talented staff uses research-based curriculum to develop and implement rigorous lesson plans that continuously raise the academic bar for its students. Hampstead Hill's whole school community is dedicated to working together to challenge students to succeed in a fair, consistent, just and joyful learning environment. The school is also a Restorative Practices Site, practicing alternative methods of supporting students through challenges and avoiding punitive or disciplinary measures. Staff believes in the importance of the arts and readies its students to be great communicators, listeners and writers. Programs of interest at Hampstead Hill include the Food for Life curriculum (and related garden) and Singapore Math (an innovative approach to teaching math skills). Hampstead Hill Academy boasts one of the most diverse student populations in the city, high levels of neighborhood engagement, and a strong student retention rate.

Meet the Principal

Matt Hornbeck has served over 20 years as the principal of Hampstead Hill Academy, one of the highest-rated elementary and middle schools in Baltimore. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College, a master’s from Temple University, and a law degree from the University of Maryland. He is a graduate of Baltimore City Schools, as are his children.

Principal Hornbeck helped design Fair Student Funding and was a member of the collective bargaining team that negotiated a performance-based teacher’s contract. He has worked across education in a variety of roles: as a consultant to urban districts on resource allocation and professional development; a senior associate on Capitol Hill with a project to improve high poverty schools; an elementary school teacher; and an undergraduate admissions officer.

Principal Hornbeck is interested in correcting the systemic undercounting of low-income immigrant students, moving students from learning to read to reading to learn, increasing science and math minutes, robust arts programming, and using restorative practices to develop emotional intelligence.
